The Way Forward For OpenVMS

What can IT Managers do about their OpenVMS systems?

If OpenVMS hosts business-critical applications then future support for the operating system is a real concern.

Over the next few years the installed base of Alpha-based OpenVMS system users will need to make some decisions.

HP ceased production of Alpha processors in 2007. They will support Alpha hardware and OpenVMS software at least until 2013. After that, the situation is less clear.

The reason for HP’s decision makes more sense when you look at the declining revenue stream from the Alpha platform over the past few years. In Q3 2002 this amounted to $300m. In Q3 2008 the revenue was $30m.

The obvious route for users planning to use OpenVMS after 2013 is to migrate to Integrity. Integrity is current technology and will be supported for many years by HP. OpenVMS is fully supported on Integrity. It is likely that OpenVMS will be supported on the Integrity platform until at least 2020 and probably beyond.

One problem though is the fact that not all current OpenVMS applications have been ported to Integrity. This may prevent current Alpha users from moving to Integrity.

For those sticking with Alpha after 2013 the support options for hardware and software from HP will invariably be expensive as parts become obsolete and support skills become more difficult to find.
