Arsenal FC History

Arsenal FC are one of the most successful clubs in world football, with 13 English First Division and Premier league titles and 10 FA Cups in the trophy cabinet. They are also one of the richest clubs in the world.

Arsenal have been in the English top league continuously for longer than any other club. They are also the only club since Preston North End in 1888-89 to survive a complete season unbeaten (in 2003-04).

The club was founded in  Woolwich in 1886 and was the first southern club to join the Football League, in 1893. The other members were:

Trophies started to accumulate in the 1930s with 5 First Division titles and 2 FA Cups. During this period Arsenal were known as the "Bank Of England Club" due to their riches.

In 1970-71 Arsenal FC were only the second club in the 20^th century to win a League and Cup double. (The first was Tottenham!)

Since then Arsenal have won the First Division/Premier League and FA Cup a number of times. They were also the first London club to reach the final of the Champions League (or the European Cup) in 2005-06.

Over the years Arsenal FC have changed both their name and their stadium.

Originally founded in 1886 as Royal Arsenal, they played in Woolwich, South London.

In 1891 the club turned professional and changed their name to Woolwich Arsenal.

In 1913 they moved to the Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London. In 1914 they changed their name to Arsenal FC.

In July 2006 they moved to their current home, The Emirates Stadium.

What allowed Arsenal to become such a huge institution is their success on the pitch. Some great players and managers have passed through the Arsenal ranks over the years.
