THE CHELSEA FC DATABASE

1905-2009

  • Chelsea FC were founded on 14 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub opposite the main entrance to the ground on Fulham Road. They were elected to the Football League shortly afterwards.

  • Chelsea have only ever had one home, Stamford Bridge. The original capacity in 1905 was 100,000. It is now a 42,000 capacity all-seater stadium.

  • The average home gate for the 2008-09 season was 41,464, the fifth highest in the Premier League.

  • When the stadium was first built in 1877 it was used by the London Athletic Club. In 1904 it was offered to Fulham FC but they turned it down. Fulham now have Craven Cottage and Chelsea have Stamford Bridge!

  • Chelsea FC was formed in 1905 in order to play in the stadium. As usual Chelsea did things differently. They built the stadium first and then formed the football club. Most clubs did it the other way round!

  • Chelsea have spent most of their history in the top tier of English football.

  • The club's early years saw little success; the closest they came to winning a major trophy was reaching the FA Cup final in 1915 where they lost to Sheffield United in the so-called Khaki Cup Final watched by thousands of soldiers on leave from the First World War.

  • The first major trophy came in 1955, the First Division title under manager Ted Drake. Chelsea were prevented from entering the new European Cup the following season by the FA.

  • Chelsea won several cup competitions during the 1960s and 1970s.

  •  The next major trophy was not won until 1997 however when they won the FA Cup again.

  • Chelsea have been League Champions three times, and have won the FA Cup five times, the League Cup four times and the European Cup Winners Cup twice. They are one of the most successful teams in the country.

  • The years since 2000 have been the most successful in Chelsea’s history, Capped by winning consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 under manager Jose Mourinho and reaching their first Champions League final in 2008.

  • In 2003 Roman Abramovitch bought the club from Ken Bates for £140 million.
