THE LEEDS UNITED FC DATABASE

1920-2009

 

 

  • Leeds City was formed in 1904 but were forcibly disbanded in 1919 due to allegations of illegal payments to players during World War 1.

 

  • Leeds United, was then formed and the club joined the Midland League on 31st October 1919. Taking the place of Leeds City Reserves.

 

  • On 31 May 1920, Leeds United were elected to the Football League.

 

  • Leeds United have played at Elland Road since their formation in 1919.

 

  • Elland Road was originally the home of Holbeck Rugby Club and called The Old Peacock Ground after the pub which still stands opposite the ground.

 

  • Elland Road is currently the 10th largest ground in England.

 

  • Since the disbanding of Leeds City in 1919 Leeds United have performed at the highest level of English football in most seasons.

 

  • In the 1960s and 1970s, with Don Revie as manager Leeds United won a number of domestic and European trophies.

 

  • After Revie's departure to manage the England team, Leeds United were relegated to the Second Division (now the Championship)  in 1982.

 

  • The club returned to the top flight in 1990 under Howard Wilkinson.

 

  • Leeds United were Premier League champions two seasons later, in 1992.

 

  • Leeds were subsequently one of Englands top clubs. They  regularly competed for places in Europe, including reaching UEFA Cup and Champions League Semi Finals in consecutive season.

 

  • Leeds were then relegated from the Premier League after serious financial problems forced the sale of a number of players.

 

  • The incumbent owners eventually sold the club to ex-Chelsea chairman Ken Bates.

 

  • Leeds United were then subject to punishment by points deductions. Despite this handicap they reached the Play-Off final.

 

  • As for today, Leeds United are still in the First Division but have made an excellent start to 2009-10 and are on-track for another attempt at promotion to the Championship.

 

  • Although famous today for their all-white kit Leeds United have worn a number of different kits over the years. Up to 1934 the shirts were blue and white stripes (same as Huddersfield). From 1934 to 1950 blue and white halved shirts. From 1950 to 1955 yellow with blue sleeves. From 1955 blue shirts. From 1961 all white kit (same as Real Madrid).
