Manchester United FC History
THE MANCHESTER UNITED FC DATABASE 1878-2009 The Perfect Manchester United Gift Manchester United has played in the top division of English football since 1938, with the exception of the 1974–75 season. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992. Average attendances have been higher than any other team in English football for all but six seasons since 1964-65. Manchester United is one of the most successful clubs in the history of English football and has won 22 major honours since Alex Ferguson became manager in November 1986. Back in 1968, they became the first English club to win the European Cup beating Benfica 4–1. They won a second European Cup as part of a Treble in 1999, before winning their third in 2008. The club holds the joint record (with Liverpool) for the most English league titles with 18 and also holds the record for the most FA Cup wins with 11. Manchester United is now one of the richest football clubs in the world. Manchester United was formed as Newton Heath Lancashire &Yorkshire Railway F.C. in 1878 as the works team. They played their home games on a field on North Road in Newton Heath. There were no changing facilities and teams had to change in local pubs. In 1893 they moved to Bank Street in nearby Clayton but the pitch and changing facilities were not much better. In time it was decided that the club required a change of name. Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were rejected and the name Manchester United was agreed upon. The new name took effect on 26 April 1902. The club’s original shirts were green and gold halves. When the club changed name to Manchester United the club kit also changed, to red shirts, white shorts, and black socks. In 1905-06 Manchester United were promoted into the First Division. In April 1909, Old Trafford became the home of Manchester United. The land was bought for about £60,000. The original stadium had a capacity of around 77,000 (more than the current stadium). On 11 March 1941, a German bomb destroyed much of the stadium, making it impossible for United to play there. From this time until 1949 when the ground was rebuilt Manchester United played their home games at Maine Road, the home of arch-rivals Manchester City. City charged United £5,000 per year for this, plus a percentage of gate receipts. In the meantime, 1945 saw the appointment of Matt Busby as manager. The club finished second in the league in 1947, 1948 and 1949 and won the FA Cup in 1948. On 6 February 1958 eight players and fifteen other passengers died in the Munich air disaster. Amidst rumours of the club closing Jimmy Murphy took over from the injured manager Matt Busby. Despite the tragedy, United reached the FA Cup Final again, where they lost to Bolton Wanderers. When Matt Busby retired Manchester United struggled to replace him. After a succession of managers the team were eventually relegated in 1974. United were promoted at the first attempt and have been in the top division ever since. Alex Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson as manager in November 1986. After a slow start Ferguson became the most successful manager in United’s history with numerous trophies won in the intervening years, including two Champions Leagues. What allowed Manchester United to become such a huge institution is their success on the pitch. Some great players and managers have passed through the Man Utd ranks over the years.
